Ron and I got to know each other because we both worked in the banking sector and specifically in Singapore in the 1980’s.
Ron was the GM for ABC in Singapore and I was Head of Syndications for Dresdner SEA. We must have originally met at a bank function then later once or twice for lunch
We were invited twice to the Upstones’ lovely house near the Marco Polo Hotel in Singapore – for lunch or dinner
Gill and Ron came to us once for dinner while we lived temporarily in a black and white house with a large garden near Tanglin Road (Ridley Park) just before we left Singapore in 1990
In July 1993 we stayed with them for 2-3 days in Singapore (near Holland Road), shortly before they left Singapore on their way to live in Bahrain, which they were looking forward to.
In August 1993 we met them in Langenwaldsee, Black Forest – for lunch. They were on their way back from Lake Como and we at the time were living in Frankfurt.
In 2003 we and our son Michael stayed with them in their house close to Lake Como, coming down there from Frankfurt, where we lived.
At some stage we visited them in Eastbourne and went for a walk along the promenade. I remember having interesting conversations with Ron
At some stage we stayed with them in Battle
In 2002-2004 Gill and Ron stayed with us in Frankfurt, together with the dogs
In 2012 or 2013 we met somewhere in Kent for lunch (halfway between Battle and Tadworth. A few months later they came for lunch to our house in Tadworth
In 2016 I had my (delayed) 70th birthday party in the Royal Automobile Club, to which Gill and Ron were invited

In 2018 we popped in for a quick cup of tea on our way back home from Yorkshire, and met Gayle and her new-born twins
Ron was someone I found very easy to talk to; I do not remember having disagreements with him on any subjects. He was always very even-tempered. Bearing this in mind I regret that we did not meet more often
